The North Sea aquarium closes for renovation – a new aquarium takes shape
After more than 25 years in use, it is time for the North Sea, one of the large aquariums in Universeum's Ocean zone, to undergo a complete renovation. Technology and functions will be modernized to create an even better experience for all visitors – but also better environments for the animals and employees.
closed for a year.
The renovation means that the North Sea aquarium will be closed for just over a year. All animals are moved to other public aquariums in the house or adapted environments behind the scenes. There, they receive daily supervision and care by Universeum's experts and aquarists. Some fish are moved to Havets Hus in Lysekil.
"The welfare of animals is always our top priority. Now that we have the opportunity to rebuild the aquarium from scratch, we can create even better and more varied environments for the animals, while at the same time developing the experience for our visitors," says Terese Swartz, Head of Living Learning Environments at Universeum.
temporary homes for our animals.
The work of moving the animals to their temporary homes is already ongoing. Once completed, the large aquarium window is secured by divers before the water is gradually drained. When the aquarium is emptied, the bottom material is removed and the old artificial concrete is sawn down to make room for new furnishings.
Universeum is open as usual.
The renovation affects parts of the Ocean zone, and from the beginning of September, the North Sea will be closed – but the rest of Universeum will be open as usual. Visitors can still experience all the other aquariums, including the large Ocean Tank with sharks and fish. While the North Sea is being rebuilt, a new experience awaits in front of the old panorama window: a digital and interactive aquarium, which gives visitors the opportunity to explore the world of the sea in a whole new way.
