Sustainability has permeated Universeum since its inception. First, on the outside – the building itself is designed for a low material consumption and built from renewable, recycled and reusable materials. But most importantly: on the inside, sustainability runs like a red thread through programs, learning environments and in the restaurant. Sustainability work never ends, but is in constant development.

Universeum's sustainability work never stops, but is constantly improving. An environmental management system that follows SUSA's standard for environmental certification is evaluated every year. The system helps us set clear, measurable goals for what really makes a difference, and adapt our efforts to what has the greatest impact. It's also linked to the UN's global goals in Agenda 2030. We make high demands on our suppliers – and ourselves – in a number of areas. Here are some examples.

Universeum currently keeps 13 species in conservation programs within European or American zoo organizations. These constitute support populations that can save species from total extinction. We meet over half a million people every year, at Universeum and out in our community. As one of Sweden's ten most visited attractions and an established learning resource for the education sector, we play an important role in societal development.

Agenda 2030.

Through Agenda 2030, the UN decided on 17 global goals for a socially, environmentally and economically sustainable world by 2030. The goals, which were adopted by the world's countries in 2015, aim to eradicate extreme poverty, reduce inequalities, promote peace and solve the climate crisis. Today, the 17 goals permeate almost all activities at Universeum.

The Global Goals School Programme is an innovative school development program developed by Universeum. It connects STEM subjects to sustainable development through real-world challenges linked to the UN's global goals in Agenda 2030. The program strengthens teachers' methods and students' learning – but above all, it builds students' action skills for sustainable development.

Through experiences in Universeum's learning environments and programs, we create a grounded understanding of the challenges the world faces. That is our food philosophy. All food that is served in our restaurant is based on ingredients that are in season and are selected with care. All dishes are climate labeled with CO2 equivalents. This means that you can see how much carbon dioxide emissions the food emits in total. Our collaboration with Generation Waste allows us to measure our food waste day by day. This way, we increase awareness of food waste among both staff, guests and partners.
