Opening hours: 10 am to 6 pm
Public premiere for Wisdome Gothenburg with fully booked performances
On July 5, 2023, Wisdome Göteborg had its public premiere. In Sweden's largest full-court visualization tour, Universeum now takes the 150 people in the audience into space, down into the depths of the ocean and back in history to the time when the dinosaurs ruled the earth. Here the impossible becomes possible.
A powerful experience
Already when you step into the visualization dome, it is clear that you will be able to experience something out of the ordinary. The projection area of 443 square meters envelops you 360 degrees all around and 165 degrees edge to edge. The dome is tilted 27 degrees forward so you are looking almost straight into the sphere. The six projectors handle six different primary colors of lasers and together generate an image with a combined resolution in 8K – a sharper image than the human eye can perceive. The 3D glasses are of the latest technology, with unique full-spectrum color technology that provides incredibly clear and colorful images. The sound system consists of ten speakers and three woofers for world-class sound.
Performances in full court format.
Wisdome Göteborg now offers great adventures, and the full-court format provides an immersive experience in both picture and sound. In the visualization dome, the audience is taken to places that humans would not otherwise have been able to reach. At the same time, the visualization judgment will be a joint vessel into real research data and important future issues.
Within the national initiative Wisdome project, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, a total of five productions are produced. These beliefs will explain how the world works from different perspectives and data. All content is based on science and human technological progress – on outstanding research that has been crucial to how we see the world. During the summer and autumn, BIG 3D will be shown in Wisdome Gothenburg – a powerful and fascinating experience, where we travel from Earth to the end of our known universe. It provides perspective on both space and the planet that is our home.
The premiere performance of BIG 3D was fully booked already a few days ago. Universeum will also show two animated performances; The Legend of the Enchanted Coral Reef and Dinosaurs – A Tale of Survival. These performances are also aimed at the younger audience.
Architecture and building
Universeum was designed by Wingårdhs in 1998, construction began in 1999 and was completed in time for the opening in 2001. It is the building that Gert Wingårdh himself most often mentions as his favorite. When Universeum started the work of developing and expanding the building, it was once again Wingårdhs who was given the assignment. In 2004, Universeum received the Wood Award, and now the extension with the visualisation dome is also built in wood to the greatest extent possible.
Universeum is built as a collage and today the last part, the sphere that houses Wisdome Gothenburg, opens. The sphere is constructed with straight elements, a geodesic sphere. Each triangle has a base and sides of about 8 meters. The total diameter of the sphere is 26.5 meters. The total height difference from street level to the top of the sphere is 57 meters.
A floating sphere
The projection surface in the visualization dome is a 443m2 tilted hemisphere of 249 thin specially shaped aluminum sheets mounted on a skeleton of steel beams of 18 meters in diameter. The tolerance between the plates is 0.1 mm so that no joints are visible. The surface is perforated with 51,428,480 small holes to let air and sound through. The structure weighs 4.5 tonnes and hangs from the ceiling in 16 chains that distribute the weight between the attachment points.
