During the winter they lie buried at a frost-free depth and hibernate while waiting for Spring. In the summer they can be found in the aquaterrariums that have their own individual signs.

They can lie in the water or remain partly visible under a root or behind a stone.

The common tree frog is nearly always up in the blackberry bushes or on the wall whereas the red-bellied toad is nearly always in the water.
