New exhibition: Graphene Print

An exhibition about a material set to change the world

First came the Stone Age, then the Bronze Age and Iron Age. And now we’re heading for the Graphene Age!

That may be how we come to see this period in the future, when we look back on how the discovery of this material, graphene, changed our lives.

It is hard to imagine all the new technology that graphene may be used for.

We’ll soon be seeing screens you can bend and ink that carries a current. And perhaps curtains will become unnecessary when you can make a window go dark at the flick of a switch.

The exhibition about graphene is financed by the Graphene Flagship and Chalmers University of Technology.

Five facts about graphene

1. Graphene is as light as a feather.

2. Graphene is the strongest material ever discovered.

Imagine laying atoms next to each other to make a sheet just one atom thick. Such a sheet of graphene is stronger than a sheet of diamond! And 100 times stronger than a sheet of steel!

3. Graphene is ultra-thin.

Graphene is one atom thick and weighs almost nothing. It is the first two-dimensional material ever created by man.

4. Graphene is an excellent conductor of electricity and heat.

5. Graphene is impermeable and at the same time transparent.

How can something be entirely impermeable and yet transparent? By being incredibly thin, like graphene. Just one atom thick!
